Still Playing With Barbies

I’m 42 years-old and I still can’t get enough of Barbie! I played with them until I was really too old. I still own my 1978 Barbie Dream House in all its yellow and orange splendor. My collection is fabulous (albeit all boxed up until I have the display space with Smithsonian level protective glass).

Since playing with Barbies is frowned upon at this age, I’ve taken to redefining “play.” Two years ago, I created the first “Do Anything” quilt. It seemed like such a monumental undertaking at the time. Slowly but surely she came together when Barbie turned 60. I did everything from the design to the quilting to the facing. To date, it’s the largest quilt I’ve completed. NO, it’s not for my daughter. She’ll inherit it one day though.

Last year, the first Black Barbie turned 40! I had every intention of completing one in her honor in the same year. However, our move from Germany back to the States threw a wrench in my quilt schedule. That’s ok! The top is now done and I love it! This time I made the silhouette black with a pink background. The border is from Riley Blake Designs 2020 Barbie line.

My sewing doesn’t just include quilts. Because I bought way more Barbie fabric than any one person should have (don’t act surprised), I decided to use it to make this cute bag! It’s the Poppins Bag by Aunties Two. This one is HUGE! Perfect for carrying my Sew & Tell quilts to guild meetings. The medium-sized is on my “to do” list.

I have some other Barbie projects in the works! More on those surprises later this year. Even if you don’t love Barbie as much as I do, the projects will be fun nonetheless! 💗
